An 2000 PARIS, FRANCE - After counting down the days and hours till the new century for the past year or so, the giant digital clock on the Eiffel Tower broke about eight hours before midnight on the 31st - but by the next day they had everything working again. This is the classic "postcard" view from the Palais de Chaillot, across the Seine.

Sunday the 2nd we tried to see the Pompidou, the national modern art museum, but it was open for the first time that day after a lengthy renovation, and the line was around the block. Then we tried to go to Pere Lachaise, the cemetary where Proust, Isadora Duncan, Oscar Wilde, Jim Morrison and a whole roster of other famous people are buried, but it was closed due to the recent storms - apparently they were afraid the monuments would topple and kill someone. If you have to die, a cemetary seems like a good place to go, but no luck, the gates were locked.
