Firenze FLORENCE, ITALY - Florence, aka Firenze, is Italy's artistic epicenter. Michelangelo's David, Botticelli's Venus - it's all there.

These pictures show the city's duomo (closeup below), a pink and green marble confection.

Firenze's Duomo

The most important thing to remember about Florence is that there are two parallel street numbering systems: Red numbers are for businesses, and blue numbers are for hotels and residences. The red and blue numbers are not related to each other, so R65 can be next door to B13. Firenze's Duomo

Don't miss the Mercato Centrale (Mon-Sat 7-2, nr. Church of S. Lorenzo). Fruits and vegetables are upstairs, and fresh bread, pungent cheese and meat - from sausages to whole sides of beef - are downstairs. Tripe sandwiches are supposed to be a Florentine specialty - in fact, there are several tripe stands around town - but if you're looking for a less adventurous picnic you might want to pick up some clementini (seedless tangerines), bread and pecorino cheese.
