FLORENCE, ITALY -
Florence, aka Firenze, is Italy's artistic epicenter. Michelangelo's David, Botticelli's Venus - it's all there.
These pictures show the city's duomo (closeup below), a pink and green marble confection.
Don't miss the Mercato Centrale (Mon-Sat 7-2, nr. Church of S. Lorenzo). Fruits and vegetables are upstairs, and fresh bread, pungent cheese and meat - from sausages to whole sides of beef - are downstairs. Tripe sandwiches are supposed to be a Florentine specialty - in fact, there are several tripe stands around town - but if you're looking for a less adventurous picnic you might want to pick up some clementini (seedless tangerines), bread and pecorino cheese. |
