ROME, ITALY -
The 19th we did the ancient Roman ruins: the Forum and the Colosseum. The Forum was a little disappointing,
but they do have a collection of resident feral cats, as do most of the Roman ruins (below, at the Pantheon).
At both the Forum and the Colosseum, English-speaking guides give extensive free tours in order to entice you to buy some of their other tours. Our guide at the Colosseum, an Aussie named Ross, gave a very lively interpretation of history, weaving together rugby and ancient gladiators and producing our catchphrase-du-jour, "No pint of Guinness for you, kill him".
When we said we were going to Italy, the first thing everyone who'd been there before said was, "Try the gelato." So, even
though it was freezing and raining, we tried the gelato. Even McDonald's has a gelato bar here. Everyone has
articles posted saying they're the best gelateria in Rome, but we latched onto a gelateria down the street from Piazza Navona.
