ORVIETO, ITALY -
The duomo (cathedral) at the top of this hill town took roughly 300 years to build - and you can see why in the detail of the facade,
shown below. Not only that, but every single piece of the thing had to be hauled up to the top of this tufa plateau by hand. These
days you have a choice between driving up the road that curls around the outside or taking the funicular.
Due to the limited real estate on top of the plateau, the village has stayed fairly medieval, with streets even more narrow, winding
and circuitous than the rest of Italy. Orvieto is known for olive oil, dry white wine and ceramics.
