500,000 of our closest friends PARIS, FRANCE - New Year's Eve we wandered out around 8:30 PM and checked out the scene on the Champs-Elysées, finally coming to rest near the Trocadéro at the corner of the Palais de Chaillot.

This photo is the scene looking back up the Avenue d'Iena at a few of the 2 million people Parisian authorities were expecting for New Years. The crowd was fairly well-behaved - better, we thought, than similar American crowds we've been in - and incredibly diverse: in the little space within elbowing distance of us were Italians, French, Russians, Germans and Japanese, all wishing each other a bonne année. Seemed like a good way to start the 21st century.

2000 confetti None of our photos of the fireworks at the tower were very impressive, but you can see a slideshow of millennium fireworks from around the world at the SF Examiner site, or just take a look at their view of the Eiffel Tower.
